Car Accident Injuries: Herniated Disc

David Cole / July 2, 2019

A herniated disc is considered a soft tissue injury. It can occur in your neck or back and it can cause severe pain and permanent disability. Insurance companies are notorious for disputing soft tissue injuries in car accident claims, trying to say that they do not exist, are not as debilitating as they really are or that they were caused by something other than the accident. Disc herniation can cost you your job, your ability to perform your normal daily tasks, and cause chronic pain. You deserve full compensation.

What is a Herniated Disc?

Herniated disc is sometimes referred to as a slipped disc or ruptured disc. The discs in your spine are cushions between the bones. They have a tough casing containing a gel-like center. When the disc is herniated, the casing is cracked or torn letting the center squeeze out. This can put pressure the nerves causing back pain as well as pain, numbness, and/or weakness in the arms or legs depending on there the ruptured disc is located.

In same cases, disc herniation can have consequences even more severe including:

  • Spinal cord injury
  • Loss of bowel and/or bladder control
  • Loss of sexual sensation and/or function
  • Paralysis

Herniated disc can be a very serious injury with life-long consequences. If you have been hurt in a car crash in Vermont or New Hampshire, the Cole Law Office is here to help you recover the full compensation you deserve for your injuries.
