With summery weather across New Hampshire, it’s a great time to get out and about. COVID shutdowns are lifting and life in 2021 is starting to feel almost normal again! If you and your family are excited to re-enter all those cherished summer activities, it’s a good time to remember these safety tips:
- Know that more children may be out and about playing. It is of course always important to carefully check behind your vehicle as you back out of your driveway, and to remain aware that children can dart out from between parked cars as you travel down a neighborhood road. While this is always important, some motorists are taken by surprise when more kids are out playing in the nicer weather, so remember to always keep your eyes on the road and to be aware of your surroundings.
- Be prepared for weekend traffic. With more people out and about, the roads are sure to be crowded. Traffic congestion is a common contributing factor to reckless and aggressive driving, both of which can lead to serious car accidents. It’s easy for our emotions to get the best of us, which is why you must take a moment to mentally prepare for traffic, especially on weekends. Remind yourself to allow for extra time whenever possible, and maintain a cool head behind the wheel so that you can safely get you and your passengers to your destination.
- Plan ahead for road trips and long distance drives. Get your car serviced if it’s due, because a well-maintained vehicle is less likely to cause problems or break down. Check online for active recalls. Pack a blanket, snacks, water, and an emergency kit in case the vehicle breaks down. Also replace worn or damaged windshield wipers and check the tire pressure. All of these things will contribute to keeping you safer on the road.
